Tuwaiq

In January 2025, I had the privilege of being selected to take part in Tuwaiq sculpture, one of the largest public art programs worldwide. Tuwaiq Sculpture is an annual international sculpture symposium organized by Riyadh Art, based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This event brings together local and international artists to create monumental sculptures in an open-air setting, in real time, allowing the public to witness the creative process from beginning to end.

The theme of this year’s edition was “From Then to Now: Joy in the Struggle of Making.” Thirty artists from 23 countries participated, working with local stone (granite and basalt). The resulting works will later be distributed across different public spaces in the city.

My sculpture, Balance, is a tribute to the contemporary era, with its fractured center made of parts that do not fit together; yet it is the space between them—the air—that allows the possibility of change for the future.

I created a sculpture 225 cm tall with the invaluable help of my assistants, who became an extension of my hands. It was the most profound experience I have ever lived, not only artistically but also on a human level. It was my first time visiting a Middle Eastern country, undertaking a project of such scale, and meeting women stone sculptors from all around the world.
