Susana botana by Fernando Ivorra
Stone and Antiquity
Susana Botana’s work arises from the need to touch matter, to build through porosity.
That same latent porosity in the material, which is reaffirmed by geology and the natural accidents that compose the materials. With each of her works, she poses a spatial problem that she tries to solve with the help of the material, according to its characteristics or properties, building a dialogue through textures that enrich with their narrative function, their primary meaning, and their condition as a form that occupies a space.
Her artistic gaze is constructed by schematizing lines with an evident evolution from naturalism towards abstraction. The purification of planes and lines, the value of the imposing mass over detail, and the clarity offered by her compositions are an aesthetic trait in many of her works. These are inspired by a primitivism that tries to hide itself through the evocation of the timeless features of Greek models, an appearance of dignity intimately related to volume and void.

Organic forms that engage in a dialogue with the raw material, its composition, and the material’s place of origin. That same connection with the raw material and the space it occupies at the moment of carving the piece draws a link with the environment and her way of seeing reality. In that constant search, she tries to stylize the forms until achieving the expression of an archetypal idea of beauty, distancing herself at times from those natural elements that inspire her so much, in order to bestow a greater poetic weight upon the forms.

Mind and hands

«Susana Botana´s mind and hands function in the same precise direction. An impeccable execution builds works in wich the word ‘object’ feels truly inappropiate. They are the ineffability of a sensation made matter, form, light. In their contemplation, the viewer feels a return to the deepest part of their forgotten being.»
