Calatorao limestone 45 x 25 x 30 cm
This piece seeks movement and dynamism, challenging the traditional conventions of static sculpture. This approach involves a quest for minimal thickness and maximum delicacy through manual stone carving. Botana draws inspiration from the rusted hulls of the great shipbuilders, representing time in sculpture with the holes left by water as it penetrates the metal of the ships stranded on the seabed, and the water reflected in the chisel marks on the stone’s surface.
technical data
Calatorao stone is a marbly limestone from the Jurassic period (over 170 million years ago) found in the Dehesa Boyal del Romeral, in the town of Calatorao, Zaragoza. Its excellent crystallization and unique tones make it a stone that can be intensely polished to a deep black, earning it the well-known name of Calatorao Black Marble.
