Calatorao limestone, 55 x 25 x 25 cm
The word «klepsydra» comes from the Greek words klepsos (to flow) and hydra (water). In ancient Greece, time was measured using water clocks, where each drop represented a fraction of it. Just as the water of rivers erodes rocks with the force of its current, my chisel works the stone, leaving a trace that evidences the influence of tools on the void that time has left in its wake.
technical data
The piece «Klepsydra» is born from the reflection on the essay «The Three Dimensions of Real Inner Time» by the philosopher Ortega y Gasset: «In each moment, life expands in the three dimensions of real inner time, in an eternal turning.»
Calatorao stone is a marbly limestone from the Jurassic period (over 170 million years ago) found in the Dehesa Boyal del Romeral, in the town of Calatorao, Zaragoza. Its excellent crystallization and unique tones make it a stone that can be intensely polished to a deep black, earning it the well-known name of Calatorao Black Marble.
