Tomato

Alabaster, 13 x 10 x 8 cm

This alabaster piece, «Tomaca» (Tomato), originates from the observation of the immediate surroundings: the vegetable garden. The neighboring orchards where vast expanses of tomato plants grow provide me with the opportunity to work with natural and locally sourced elements. Like a still life, the alabaster engages in a dialogue with the crevices, furrows, and textures of this prized fruit, melting at the mercy of the unexpected cut that a knife provides when slicing a tomato.

technical data

The alabaster, like gypsum or plaster stone, can be scratched with a fingernail. This fine-grained variety of gypsum is extracted from Spanish, English, or Tuscan quarries. Its softness allows it to be carved into very elaborate forms.
