Encounter II

Honorable Mention 28th Meliana Art Biennial 2021

Alabaster, 30 x  30 x 27 cm

This piece is a refuge, a place to hibernate or where an embryo can develop. I made it in 2020 during the Covid-19 state of alarm.

«Encounter II» is a tribute to the light of the Mediterranean, to the water of the sea, and to the irrigation channels that surround my workshop. I use alabaster because it is a translucent stone, allowing me to play with the light within it.

Each frame is a cloud, each door
leads to the sea, to the field, to the air, each table
is a feast; closed like shells,
time uselessly besieges them,
there is no time now, nor wall: space, space,
open your hand, seize this wealth,
cut the fruits, eat from life,
lie down at the foot of the tree, drink the water!

Stone of Sun. Freedom under Word, 1957

technical data

Libertad bajo palabra, 1957 Octavio Paz

Alabaster, like plasterstone or gypsum, can be scratched with a fingernail. This fine-grained variety of plasterstone is extracted from quarries in Spain, England, or Tuscany. Its softness allows it to be carved into very elaborate shapes.
