Island
Alabaster and oak wood, 25 x 17 x 9 cm
The fracturing of the stone to obtain the worked block is a part of the process typically experienced in the solitude of the studio or in the quarry. It is merely a practical step to achieve the right size. It is a tense, exciting, decisive moment that is usually not shown in the final piece. «Isla» is a tribute to this microsecond in which everything changes and not only depends on the skill of the stonemason but also on the composition of the stone. In this piece, I seek to play with what remains «after the strike»—those wounds, concave, convex, full of Life.
technical data
Alabaster, like plasterstone or gypsum, can be scratched with a fingernail. This fine-grained variety of plasterstone is extracted from quarries in Spain, England, or Tuscany. Its softness allows it to be carved into very elaborate shapes.
