Sprout
Cork wood and plant fiber, 25 x 10 x 10 cm
The contrast between a deliberate human cut (a line) and the organic growth of the plant—its thick bark and bare trunk—is central to this piece. The sprout’s growth in the unprotected area of the branch symbolizes art, which is a raw and openhearted creation, a birth that unfolds with open vulnerability and inherent strength.
technical data
The cork oak (surera) is a tree found in the Sierra de Espadán mountains in Valencia. It is fascinating how the tree generates a thick bark to protect itself for years. Esparto grass is a plant fiber that grows in poor, typically limestone soils in southern Spain and North Africa.
This piece was exhibited at Espacio Esparto, Chelva, Valencia. It also lent its title to the collective exhibition «En la periferia crecen pequeños tesoros» (Small Treasures Grow on the Periphery), an artwork displayed alongside the works of artists Julie Karpodines and Helma Vanrens during August 2023.
