Spiti Mou
Calatorao limestone, 38 x 16 x 4 cm
Sometimes, the handling of mechanical tools and their techniques reveals unexpected ways of working, shortening the path to our objective. Contact with experienced stonemasons is crucial for understanding the stone. Through trial and error, we find technical solutions that feel natural to us. This is what happened with «Spiti Mou,» where I discovered a technique that I applied to several pieces: fracturing the stone with a drill and a strike, leaving the break as an integral part of the final artwork.
technical data
Calatorao stone is a marbly limestone from the Jurassic period (over 170 million years ago) found in the Dehesa Boyal del Romeral, in the town of Calatorao, Zaragoza. Its excellent crystallization and unique tones make it a stone that can be intensely polished to a deep black, earning it the well-known name of Calatorao Black Marble.
